Harold Wilson: a reappraisal of the Labour Prime Minister
Nick Thomas-Symonds is an author, barrister, Labour MP, and current Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade.
He has written a fascinating new biography of the Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson – called Harold Wilson:The Winner. His starting point is that Wilson won four general elections, and spent eight years in Downing Street. Nick writes: ‘Half a century later he is still Labour’s greatest-ever election performer. How did he do it – and at what cost?’ Wilson, of course, was Prime Minister during a time of great cultural and social change. Nick argues that he was a complex figure – ‘a media-savvy harbinger of modernity’, but also ‘deeply traditional’.
Nick Thomas-Symonds is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and is the author of two other political biographies, Attlee: A Life in Politics, and Nye: The Political Life of Aneurin Bevan.
