The Wichita House prototype,
designed by Richard Buckminster Fuller

Early Modernist architects put the factory-made house at the heart of their campaign to reform the art of architecture. Their efforts mostly failed, but meanwhile, outside the boundaries of architectural culture, builders and manufacturers got on with the job and transformed the production of popular housing.

Colin Davies is an architect and author. His most recent book is A New History of Modern Architecture, published by Laurence King.
