The Beagle’s voyage under her captain, Robert Fitzroy, took place much later in the 1830s and has entered the history books because the young Charles Darwin was on board and it allowed him to visit the Galapagos Islands where the peculiar isolated fauna sowed the seed of his later ideas on evolution.  But Robert Fitzroy himself was no mean scientist and would later found the Meteorological Office.
