Janacek’s powerful and extraordinary Czech opera mystery 

We are very privileged to welcome the return of Penny Chalmers describing her and other singers’ approach to performing Emilia Marty in Janacek’s poignant opera mystery The Makropulos Case. The evening is guaranteed to bring great insights and some more wonderful and moving revelatory music.

PENELOPE CHALMERS (SOPRANO)

Penelope Chalmers read German at Bristol University and was a social worker before her career as a professional singer. With the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden she has performed Helmwige, Ortlinde and Gerhilde in The Ring. In 1996 she took over as Brünnhilde at the Royal Opera with minimal notice during a performance of Die Walküre broadcast live by BBC Radio 3. Other roles in the UK include Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle for English National Opera and the title role in Strauss’s Salome for Scottish Opera.

Penelope has sung the role of Emilia Marty in Janacek’s Makropulos Case in several countries and languages around the world, including Germany, the USA, France and Holland.

Penelope has sung in major opera houses in Geneva, Koblenz, Frankfurt, Berlin, Seoul, Adelaide, and San Francisco.
