Film-maker Derek Jarman had spent all his working life in London when, in 1987, on a visit to Dungeness, he saw an old fisherman’s cottage for sale and on the spur of the moment decided to buy it. During the last seven years of his life he transformed the shingle around the cottage into a flowering garden. Peter Webb was among the friends who visited him and gave him seeds and plants.
Recently the house and garden were saved for the nation after a public appeal. This is the story of how Derek Jarman created his amazing garden.
