The course will explore the social and cultural basis of civilisation in Europe and the Mediterranean world from 1934 to 2000. Drawing on historical and literary texts, architecture, material culture, music, and the visual arts, it will look at the complex and shifting relationships between the present and the past in the definition and transformation of national, cultural, political, and religious identities.
"The specific focus, in the Summer Term, will be on the period from 1950 to 2000, including feminism & the sexual revolution; youth and pop culture; relationships between Europe and the Middle East (Israel, the Arab world, Iran, Turkey); the break-up of the Soviet Union; and the computing revolution
